AS 2252.2:2025 requires critical performance tests to be completed before a Class II Biological Safety Cabinet is dispatched to the customer. Further testing is then required following installation, relocation and as part of the cabinet’s ongoing periodic verification.
These stages serve different purposes. On-site testing confirms that the cabinet performs correctly within the user’s working environment following transport and installation. Factory testing should provide evidence that the individual cabinet was correctly constructed, configured, inspected and tested before it entered the market.
A routine on-site report will generally focus on measurable performance characteristics such as airflow velocity, HEPA filter integrity, air-barrier containment, work-zone integrity and alarm operation. These tests are essential, but performance results alone do not necessarily demonstrate that every construction and safety requirement of AS 2252.2:2025 has been addressed.

A comprehensive factory test report should combine performance results with documented construction evidence traceable to the individual cabinet.
This should include:
- the cabinet model, serial number, report number, test date and technician;
- the general airflow and containment configuration;
- materials and work-zone construction;
- the outer shell and gas-tight containment boundary;
- viewing-window construction, marked sash operating height where applicable, sash restraint and fall-protection arrangements;
- HEPA filter grades, installation seals, guards, pressure monitoring and sampling ports;
- access-panel sealing, biohazard warnings and decontamination requirements;
- blower operation, filter-loading performance and recorded fan settings;
- alarm functions, interlocks, electrical safety and sealed penetrations;
- floor, grille and sump construction;
- UV safety systems where fitted;
- applicable AS 1807 performance-test results; and
- identification and correction factors for the instruments used.

Why construction evidence matters
A cabinet may pass an airflow or containment test while important construction details remain unverified. Examples include the condition of the sash mechanism, the integrity of containment-panel seals, electrical penetrations, filter mounting arrangements, warning labels, materials and cleanability.
Type testing remains useful because it can establish that a cabinet design is capable of complying with a recognised standard. However, type testing alone does not demonstrate that every production cabinet has been manufactured consistently with the tested design or that the individual cabinet supplied remains compliant.
Unit-specific factory evidence closes this gap by linking the construction inspection and performance results directly to the cabinet serial number.
Imported cabinets
The Introduction to AS 2252.2:2025 states that, where an overseas manufacturer does not have an Australian office, the importer or seller is treated as the manufacturer for the purposes of the document and conducts the relevant factory testing.
This provides an equal pathway for locally manufactured and imported cabinets. An importer may rely on suitable evidence from the overseas factory where it clearly demonstrates conformity with AS 2252.2:2025. Where that evidence is absent or does not address the Australian requirements, the importer should arrange the necessary inspection and pre-delivery testing before supplying the cabinet.
Factory testing and on-site verification
Factory testing does not replace on-site verification, and on-site verification does not replace evidence of construction conformity.
Together, they provide:
- evidence that the cabinet was correctly constructed and tested before delivery;
- confirmation that it performs correctly after transport and installation;
- traceability throughout the cabinet’s service life;
- stronger support for periodic testing and maintenance; and
- greater confidence for laboratory owners, users and service personnel.
